Jemdet Nasr

Jemdet Nasr
   The name of the site of an early Sumerian town and of the last prehistoric period before the Sumerian cities entered their first great age of power and prosperity. Modern scholars usually date the Jemdet Nasr period to roughly 3200 to 3000 b.c. The site itself, located about 60 miles (97 km) south of Baghdad, was first excavated in 1925 and again briefly in the late 1980s. Examples of pottery, cylinder seals, and clay tablets bearing cuneiform writing were found. The writing, dubbed proto-cuneiform by scholars, was used mainly for administrative purposes. Some tablets mention other Sumerian towns, including Ur, Larsa, Uruk, and Nippur, and evidence suggests that the Jemdet Nasr period was an era of cooperation among these cities.
